About Whiplash

Whiplash is a term commonly used to describe how some spinal injuries are sustained – at any point where the spine is unexpectedly moved in one direction and then rebounds in the opposite direction there is the possibility of developing a whiplash type injury. These injuries are not just limited to car accidents, as is commonly thought. They can occur by a simple fall, knock or sports related collision. The sudden whiplash movement results in damage to the muscles, ligaments and tendons in and around the neck thus leading to complaints of neck pain, headaches and lower back pain.

Most whiplash sufferers have misaligned vertebrae in their spine. There are different degrees of whiplash type injuries and in order to decide the appropriate treatment it is important that your chiropractor understand the mechanics of how your whiplash type injury occurred. Each case will be different. The exact nature of the symptoms will vary depending on the type and direction of impact, as well as sex, age and physical condition. It is not uncommon for signs and symptoms of a whiplash type injury to come on after a period of time, sometimes with a delay of days or weeks. Delays usually occur because inflammation can take 24-72 hours to develop. It is not uncommon for some injuries to go unnoticed for weeks, or even months.

Your Chiropractor will discuss with you exactly what examinations will be appropriate, given the nature of the injury. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed your Chiropractor will discuss specific treatment options with you. Treatment will more than likely involve gentle spinal adjustments to your neck to reduce inflammation and irritation to the nervous system. This will also allow your body to regain normal neck joint movement and freedom, alleviating the cause of your neck pain. Soft tissue work will take place to the tight traumatised musculature which will reduce tension and minimize the chance of spinal misalignment re-occurrence and further reduce pain. The combination of spinal adjusting and soft tissue therapy will allow your joints, muscles and blood vessels to relax and function properly. Your Chiropractor will also recommend work adaptations and/or rest and the use of ice packs to reduce inflammation. Once healing is underway heat and ice packs alternations, rehabilitation exercises involving home stretching and strengthening exercises will be prescribed to improve strength, endurance and stability.

It is important to be patient with your care as it can take weeks and sometimes months of treatment to improve and correct. Continuity of care and attending your appointments is very important as the treatments work on retraining and strengthening the muscles and ligaments that support the joints.
